UCF athletics--in conjunction with the UCF Police Department and Orange County Traffic Engineering--has conducted an off-season study and made enhancements for the 2019 season to expedite the return home for fans attending Knights’ home football games at Spectrum Stadium.
As it has been in the past, the contraflow post game traffic plan takes place from 90 minutes after kickoff until postgame.
Here are new elements to the 2019 UCF football traffic plan:
--Adjustments have been made with Orange County to expand the post-game traffic plan on Alafaya Trail and University Boulevard.
-- To keep pedestrians safer and to flow traffic most efficiently, UCF is implementing a new pedestrian-only path in front of Addition Financial Arena (Gemini Boulevard North). Pedestrians must cross Gemini in front of Addition Financial Arena and walk down Memory Mall to return to the C and D parking garages and flat lots. Pedestrians will not be able to cross the west side of the intersection of Gemini and Orion in front of Garage D.
--Garage D permit-holders now can exit straight on to Orion or take a right on Gemini and exit through Research Park.
--Garage F permit-holders now must make a right on West Plaza Drive toward Orion Boulevard and exit campus west on McCulloch Road.
“Fans need to understand that we’ll be sold out for most, if not all, our home games this year which means more than 45,000 people all trying to leave campus at the same time,” says UCFD Chief Carl Metzger. “Even with an updated traffic plan, fans need to be patient and understand there will be traffic postgame.”
Here are additional pregame adjustments:
--Parking for ADA guests has moved to the first level of Garage C (at the intersection of North Orion Boulevard and Scorpius Street) to more than double the number of available spaces. A free shuttle for ADA patrons and fans who accompany them will be provided from the bus loop adjacent to Garage C to Spectrum Stadium (Gate 14). Those shuttles will run from three hours prior to kick-off until two hours after kick-off. Throughout the game and postgame, shuttles will be available, picking up from Gate 14, to return ADA patrons to the bus loop (Garage C). Additional accessible parking spaces are available throughout the campus in non-permit lots, and these spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis to any guest displaying a valid Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles permit; however, no direct shuttle service will be available for these spaces.
--Park and Ride services will be available on all home game days from four hours before kickoff (previously two hours) until two hours after the game ends. Fans should park at the Research Pavilion, located at 12424 Research Parkway in the Central Florida Research Park adjacent, to campus. Shuttles will transport fans from the Research Pavilion to the Research 1 bus loop (adjacent to Garage C). No tailgating will be permitted at the Research Pavilion lot.
“Our goal is to clear campus traffic as quickly as possible which means implementing contraflow in some areas and forcing one-way only situations. Fans might not have the most direct route home, but our goal is to send them the fastest route. As an example, if you travel to the theme parks from the east side of town, you are probably willing to drive several miles out of your way to avoid I-4 because you know it will get you there faster even though it’s not the most direct route,” says UCF deputy athletics director Scott Carr.
“We urge all fans to research the best route to their destination from their campus exit point ahead of time.”
