Moon Punches Ticket to US Women's Amateur

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – On the heels of a historic freshman campaign, Elizabeth Moon punched her ticket to the United States Women’s Amateur Championship by way of a runner-up finish at the qualifying tournament at Oceanside Country Club on Tuesday.

The rising sophomore carded a 4-under, 68, in the lone round of the event, two shots back of the champion.

The American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year was instrumental in helping the Knights reach the NCAA Championship this season. The rookie averaged 72.2 strokes per round. She was honored as All-America Honorable Mention by Golfweek and an All-America Scholar by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association.

Earlier this summer, Moon earned runner-up honors at the Florida Women's Amateur Championship.

Moon will get her shot at the Robert Cox Cup over the course of seven days, Aug. 5-11, at the Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. The format features two rounds of stroke play, after which the top 64 players will compete in match play to determine a champion. The first edition of the United State Women’s Amateur Championship was held in 1895 and the 2019 tournament will be the 125th in history.

Incoming freshman, Tunrada Piddon will be a first alternate. The Thailand international shot an even-par, 72, to tie for sixth place but fell just short in a playoff for the final spot.
