Tate Qualifies for U.S. Amateur

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Recent graduated senior Kyler Tate has qualified for the 2019 U.S. Amateur, which will be played at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C., from August 12-18.

Tate qualified for the tournament at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Ark., Monday afternoon. Tate finished tied for third overall after the two rounds of qualifying. Tate shot 71-71 for a 142(-2) total to punch his ticket to Pinehurst.

Tate was one of six golfers at Chenal Country Club to qualify for the event and missed the lead by just one stroke.

The tournament will start with a 312-player field where they will play 36 holes over two days. At the end of those two rounds, the top 64 players on the leaderboard advance into match play. Players are seeded based on where the finished on the leaderboard followed by a match of cards to determine seeds among players tied after stroke-play qualifying. They will then play down from 32 to 16 in the morning, then 16 to eight in the afternoon. Afterwards, they play down from eight to four the morning of the next day and then play down from four to two in the afternoon. These are all 18-hole matches, with ties going to sudden-death until a winner is determined.

The final match is a 36-hole affair on the final day, with a morning 18 holes, followed by an afternoon round until the match is decided. It does not have to go 36 holes. At that point, we have a US Amateur champion and they get the Havemeyer Trophy for a year.
