Five Knights Earn All-Conference Accolades

ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF softball squad took home five American Athletic Conference accolades Wednesday afternoon.

Pitcher Alea White earned First-Team All-Conference, Cassady Brewer earned Second-Team All-Conference as a catcher, and Breanna Vasquez, Karissa Ornelas, and Damaria Cannon each earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team.

White wrapped up conference play with a 1.45 earned run average, the second-best in The American. In 15 appearances, White made 13 starts and threw 92.0 innings against conference opponents collecting 62 strikeouts and giving up just 19 earned runs.

White won six straight games in The American helping sweep UConn and ECU. The Land O’Lakes native also picked up wins against Houston and two against Memphis.

Among other pitchers in The American, White was second in most innings pitched and wins and third in most strikeouts. White finished the regular season of conference play with a 9-6 record.

This will be the first season White has earned First-Team honors and the third consecutive season as an All-Conference selection after being named to the Second-Team during her freshman and sophomore seasons.

With the recognition, White becomes the seventh UCF pitcher to make First-Team All-Conference and the third to do it in The American.

Brewer is the second player in program history to be earn All-Conference honors all four years of her career at UCF joining Stephanie Best as the only two players in program history to accomplish this feat.

The senior was named Freshman of the Year her rookie season and was named First-Team All-Conference in her previous three seasons.

Brewer hit an impressive .389 in conference games with five doubles, eight runs scored and eight RBI. Brew drew 10 walks and reached base safely in 15 of her 19 conference games. Brewer wrapped up her final season in The American with a .492 on base percentage and a .593 slugging percentage.

The Apopka native had seven multi-hit games against conference opponents and had the fourth best batting average in The American.

Vasquez, Ornelas, and Cannon have each made an impact during conference play this season.

Vasquez was impressive in the circle all season after pairing well with White. Vasquez made nine appearances and started eight games for UCF and held one of the best ERA’s in the conference. After throwing 56.0 innings, Vasquez recorded a 2.12 ERA giving up 17 earned runs, striking out 40 and kept opponents to a .266 average. Vasquez picked up wins against UConn to help the Knights sweep the Huskies and another against Memphis to also sweep.

Ornelas started 14 of her 15 games played with four RBI, two doubles, and hit .242. Ornelas split time between catching and as a DP and came in clutch multiple times including driving in three runs in the series sweep against Memphis.

Cannon played in 16 games during conference play and started nine hitting .333. The rookie hit a trio of doubles playing mainly at the DP position. Often hitting leadoff, Cannon boasted a .412 on base percentage and a .500 slugging percentage.

ON DECK
The Knights will be the No. 5 seed in The American Tournament, which will begin Thursday, May 9 in Houston. UCF will take on the No. 4 seed Wichita State at around 12 p.m. Thursday.
