Zeleva Bested in First Round of NCAA Singles

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Redshirt Sophomore No. 40 Valeriya Zeleva was defeated in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships by California’s No. 41 Julia Rosenqvist 6-0, 6-2.

In the first set, Rosenqvist came storming out of the gate, breaking Zeleva for the third time to seal the first set. The second set favored Rosenqvist just as the first did. Zeleva went down 1-0 but came right back to tie the score at 1-1. From there, Rosenqvist won three more games before Zeleva climbed back in the match to trail 2-4. From there, Rosenqvist sealed the deal with a 6-2 second set victory.

Zeleva will finish her season with a record of 18-7. She was phenomenal all season long at the top singles spot, going toe to toe with the nation’s best. She picked up 10 of her 18 wins over ranked opponents.

UP NEXT
Zeleva will pair up with Ksenia Kuznetsova as they begin their quest in the NCAA Doubles Championships tomorrow around 6:30 p.m. They will be televised on the Tennis Channel as they face No. 32 Hind Abdelouahid and Mariia Kozyreva of St. Mary’s. Their match is scheduled to take place on court five at the UCF Collegiate Tennis Center at the USTA National Campus.
