ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The No. 25 UCF women’s tennis team will face the USF Bulls in the American Athletic Conference championship tomorrow at 10 a.m. This will be the second time the two teams have met in the last nine days.
The Knights will be seeking their first conference championship in the American Athletic Conference in it’s sixth year of existence. The last time that UCF won a conference championship was in 2002 when they were a part of the A-Sun. The Knights have five conference championships to their name.
It will be an interesting series of events tomorrow. With the recency of their previous match up, one might think that the two sides may know a lot about each other. That may not be the case, considering that the Knights were missing their No. 1 singles player, Valeriya Zeleva, for the match. With that said, it is very likely that nobody will play the same player twice.
It will be worth watching a few things closely for the Knights on championship Sunday. In doubles, the Knights are 18-1 when they win the doubles point this season. Natalia Serrano and Domenika Turkovic have teamed up to win seven straight doubles matches and are 7-0 at the No. 3 position. Right next door, Marie Mattel and Rebeka Stolmar have won six in a row and have a 10-1 record at the second doubles position. In singles play, Mattel has been the only one to complete and win both of her matches in the conference tournament so far.
Since the inception of the conference, only USF and Tulsa have won a championship, with USF taking home two trophies with Tulsa bringing home three. The Knights will attempt to become the third team to win the conference crown.
