ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF softball team’s winning streak came to an end Saturday afternoon after falling to Wichita State, 6-3 in 10 innings. The loss is also the Knight’s first loss in the American Athletic Conference.
A back-and-forth duel between the Knights and Shockers combined for nine runs, 14 hits, and five errors.
Breanna Vasquez collected the loss to move to 8-4 on the season. The Knights move to 28-10 overall and 7-1 in The American.
Things You Need To Know:
- Karissa Ornelas started her first game behind the plate. Ornelas caught two runners stealing in her collegiate debut at catcher.
- The Knights out-hit the Shockers, 9-5, but committed four errors.
- Vasquez tossed all 10 innings giving up five hits, two earned runs, and struck out seven.
- Denali Schappacher was the only Knight to collect multiple hits with a pair along with one RBI.
- The 10 innings played is the longest game the Knights have had this season.
- The Knights remain atop the conference standings as the only team to lose just one game.
- UCF went 11 straight games without losing a game. The last time the Knights went 11 games without a loss was 2012 and 2015.
- The Knights are 4-1 on Sundays this season.
- The last time UCF lost at home was on March 3 against then-No. 1 Florida State.
Scoring:
UCF: 1-0 | 3rd | Kyra Klarkowski reached on a bunt single and moved over to third with a sacrifice from Emanuel and a pass ball. Schappacher chopped a single up the middle to plate Klarkowski.
WU: 1-1 | 4th | With the bases loaded, an error allowed the Shockers to even the score.
UCF: 2-1 | 5th | After a throwing error, Takiya London, Klarkowski, and Erin Emanuel consecutively reached base and Julylia brought home London with a ground ball to shortstop.
WSU: 3-2 | T6th | After a pair of walks and an error, the Shockers got a pair of runs back with a single to right field.
UCF: 3-3 | B6th | With Kendyl Lange pinch hitting for Jazmine Esparza on third, Barlow smashed a triple down the right field line to score Lange.
WSU: 6-3 | 10th | An error allowed a runner to reach base and a double scored the run from second base. The Shockers crushed a two-run home run to left center.
