ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF softball team came up short after a late rally, dropping a 2-1 decision to Wichita State in an American Athletic Conference contest at the UCF Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights (28-22, 7-2 The American) struck first as Denali Schappacher stole home to put the home squad up 1-0 in the first inning.
Wichita State (23-17, 4-5 The American) responded in the top of the second to knot the score at 1-1. A leadoff single and a walk put a pair of runners on and the Shockers were able to push a run across before solid defensive play allowed the Knights to limit the damage.
Neither team was able to threaten offensively until the top of the sixth when the Shockers opened the inning with a solo home run that proved to be the difference-maker.
Trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh, UCF used its patience at the plate to put a pair of runners on second and third with two outs, but a lineout ended the game before the Knights could plate the tying run.
Alea White (20-7) gave up two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Schappacher, Karissa Ornelas and Erin Emanuel combined for UCF’s three hits in the game.
