Knights Set For The American Championship

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (UCFKnights.com) – The second-seeded UCF women’s basketball team is set to face seventh-seeded Tulsa in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday in Mohegan Sun Arena.

 

The Knights (24-5) and the TEAM (13-17) tip off at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN3.

Notes to Know

  • UCF’s 59-50 win at Houston in the regular season finale gave the Knights 24 regular season wins – the most in the program’s NCAA Division I history.
  • The Knights are the second seed at the American Athletic Conference Championship – their highest seed since the 2011 Conference USA Championship - after posting a 13-3 record in league play.
  • UCF received votes in both the AP and USA Today/WBCA Top 25 this week. UCF remained in the Top 25 of the NCAA RPI for the 12th straight week.
  • Kay Kay Wright leads the Knights with 18.3 points per game, 3.7 assists per contest and 1.9 steals per game.
  • Nyala Shuler is UCF’s leading rebounder with 7.0 boards per contest and ranks fifth all-time with 816 career rebounds.
  • Brittney Smith lead the squad with 20 blocks.
  • Kayla Thigpen has scored in double figures 14 times this season and is UCF’s second leading scorer on the season at 9.3 points per game.

 

Praise for a Pair

  • For the third consecutive year, two members of UCF’s squad were recognized for their performance during the 2019 American Athletic Conference season.
  • Kay Kay Wright was named to The American All-Conference First Team and Kayla Thigpen was tabbed as the league’s Sixth Player of the Year.
  • The conference accolades are career firsts for both ladies.
  • Wright became the second Knight to earn first team honors in The American, joining Aliyah Gregory (2016-17).
  • Thigpen became the first Knight to earn an individual award in The American.

 

Scouting the Opponents

  • The quarterfinal matchup will be the second meeting between the Knights and the Hurricane. UCF won the first contest 60-48 in Orlando on Jan. 16.
  • Tulsa advanced to the quarterfinals with a 61-50 win over No. 10 Wichita State on Friday evening.
  • Entering the tournament, Crystal Polk - a third team all-conference honoree - led Tulsa with 13.2 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per contest.
  • Alexis Gaulden averaged 11.6 points per game and 4.5 assists per contest entering the tournament.
