ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF men’s tennis team jumped nine spots to No. 33 in the latest Oracle/ITA rankings release on Tuesday.
Since the last release of the rankings on March 19, the Knights have split a pair of decisions against ranked opponents. Wednesday saw UCF shut out the No. 26 Oklahoma State Cowboys, good enough for the Knight’s sixth shutout of the season. No. 13 Illinois visited the Knights on Friday and rallied after losing the doubles point to beat the Black and Gold 4-2. With those two results, the Knights have now gone 4-7 against top-50 opposition.
Trey Hilderbrand has been on a roll for the Knights lately. He has won his last three matches and is 8-1 over his last 10. Not only has he done well in singles, but he and Bogdan Pavel have combined to go 10-3 in the top doubles position for the Knights. The duo has gone 8-2 over their last 10 including four straight victories, two over ranked opposition. While new doubles rankings don’t come out until next week, Hilderbrand and Pavel currently sit as the No. 54 doubles pair in the nation.
UCF only has a trio of games remaining on their schedule with two of the three at the UCF Collegiate Tennis Center at the USTA National Campus. The FAU Owls come to Orlando on Sunday, March 31 at 6 p.m. The Knights won’t see match action for another two weeks after that. The War on I-4 rivalry will be renewed on April 14 as the Knights travel to Tampa to take on USF at 1:30. The following day will be UCF’s season finale against the Memphis Tigers.
