ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF softball team secured their opening American Athletic Conference series Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 win over UConn.
UCF is now 22-9 overall and 2-0 to start conference play, while UConn falls to 9-14 overall and 0-2 in The American.
Breanna Vasquez picked up her eighth win of the season throwing a complete game in the win. The freshman improves to 8-3 on the year.
Tamesha Glover led the Knights offensively going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
Things You Need To Know:
- The win over the Huskies gives UCF five-straight victories.
- Vasquez did not allow a walk in seven innings pitched and allowed just three hits, while striking out seven. The rookie improves her season earned run average to 1.28 in 15 appearances.
- In UCF’s last five games, Glover is hitting .600 with seven doubles, four stolen bases, and five RBI.
- Jazmine Esparza drove in a run for the Knights as she continues to lead the team with 22 RBI. She went 1-for-3 on the day.
- Takiya London started at shortstop for UCF racking up five putouts and contributed a pair of hits and a double for the Knights.
- At home, UCF is hitting .269 scoring 67 runs on 125 hits with a 14-5 record.
- The Knights tallied four doubles on the day bringing their season total to 49 on the season after registering 52 last year.
Scoring:
UCF: 1-0 | 1st | After Glover doubled to deep centerfield, Esparza drove her in with a single to right field.
UCF: 2-0 | 5th | Glover doubled to center field and Cassady Brewer followed with a double to left center to drive in Glover.
UConn: 2-1 | 7th | The Huskies scored an unearned run after a leadoff single and a stolen base with a throwing error allowed a runner to score after a sacrifice fly to center.
ON DECK
The final game of the series with UConn is slated for an 11 a.m. first pitch on Sunday.
