The Knights (16-5, 6-3) missed out on a big opportunity to move back into the race for first in The American and build their NCAA Tournament at-large berth resume on Thursday, falling to No. 12 Houston (22-1, 9-1) at home.

Only one team has been able to top the Cougars this season though, Temple at home, as the Coogs look to be a formidable out down the stretch of league play. UCF, meanwhile, needs to get back on track to finish strong with nine games left to play in the regular season.

The Knights have not lost back-to-back games all season, and to continue that trend they will need to win on the road. UCF is just 2-3 in true road games this season, having won at UConn and at Tulane, but having fallen at Missouri, Wichita State and Memphis.

Dallas is a place the Knights haven’t had much success, winning just one out of eight total games at SMU (12-10, 4-6). UCF defeated the Mustangs for the first time since both joined The American on Feb. 17 of last season when the Knights held SMU to a program record tying mark of 37 points.

NOTES TO KNOW

  • SMU holds an 11-7 advantage over UCF in the all-time series and won eight in a row before the Knights’ victory late last season.
  • The Knights are ranked 17th in the nation in least turnovers (244) and at 11.6 per game, are on pace to set a new program record (13.0).
  • Tacko Fall has successfully won all 21 tipoffs this season and each of the last 25 dating back to last year.
  • Fall became the 20th member of UCF’s 1000-Point Club on Thursday, joining teammate BJ Taylor, who is ninth all-time with 1,451 career points.
  • Taylor is 19th in the nation with 128 free throws made on the season, which is also the eighth most in a single season at UCF.
