ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The No. 23 UCF women’s tennis team had redshirt sophomore Valeriya Zeleva named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
In the team’s lone match this weekend against Baylor, Zeleva contributed a singles and doubles point for the Knights in their 6-1 victory on Sunday.
Zeleva is playing phenomenally in her first year of collegiate tennis, as she is 6-0 at the number one spot in singles play. That includes two wins against ranked opponents, FSU’s No. 39 Carla Touly and Baylor’s No. 59 Livia Kraus.
In doubles play, Zeleva has been just as solid alongside her partner Ksenia Kuznetsova Together, they have gone 6-0 at the number one position. They have taken down two ranked pairs on the year, taking down Tulsa’s No. 4 Okalova/Ploner and FSU’s No. 40 Salas/Oparenovic.
While Zeleva is unranked for the moment, the first ITA/ORACLE singles and doubles rankings of the spring will be released on Wednesday. She has a very good shot of seeing a number next to her name by UCF’s next match.
