Wright Receives USBWA National Honor

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – For the second day in a row, Kay Kay Wright earned a player of the week accolade. One day after being tabbed as the American Athletic Conference’s honoree, Wright was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Ann Meyers Drysdale Women’s National Player of the Week.

On Monday, the Orlando native became the first Knight to earn multiple Player of the Week nods since UCF joined The American in 2013-14. On Tuesday, she became the first Knight to earn a national accolade since Aliyah Gregory was named to the NCAA Team of the Week in 2017. According to the information available to the UCF Strategic Communications office, Wright is the first member of the UCF women’s basketball team to be named the USBWA National Player of the Week.

Wright averaged 22.5 points per game while shooting 51.3 percent from the field and became the 19th Knight in UCF history to score her 1,000th career point. She also led the Knights with 6.5 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per contest.

Her 24 points on 55 percent shooting against the Owls was the fourth time this season that she has registered a 20-point game while shooting over 50 percent from the field.

Wright scored a game-high 21 points in UCF’s 57-49 win on Feb. 20 as the Knights made their first trip to Wichita State.

The point guard has nearly doubled her scoring average in each of the last two seasons. After averaging just 4.8 points per game as a freshman, she averaged 10.8 points per game last year as a sophomore. Not only has Wright bolstered her scoring this season with 24 double-digit outings, she’s reached the 20-point mark a career-best 13 times for an average of 18.3 points per contest.

The junior also continues to climb the UCF career charts. She took over sole possession of fourth all-time with 370 career assists and passed Gylaunda Henderson (1993-97) for seventh all-time with 193 career steals.

UCF will host Tulane on Saturday in its final home contest of the regular season. The Knights will recognize their seven-member senior class following the 2 p.m. contest.
