Hosting The War

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The War on I-4 comes to CFE Arena on Sunday as the UCF women’s basketball team hosts South Florida.

 

The Knights (18-3, 7-1 The American) and the Bulls (11-10, 2-5 The American) will tip off at 1 p.m. on ESPN2.

Notes to Know

  • For the fourth consecutive week, UCF is receiving votes in both the AP Top 25 and the USA Today/WBCA Top 25 polls.
  • The Knights are 8-0 in CFE Arena this season and have won their last 10 home games, dating back to the 2017-18 campaign.
  • Kay Kay Wright leads the Knights with 17.6 points per game, 3.6 assists per contest and 1.9 steals per game.
  • Nyala Shuler is UCF’s leading rebounder with 7.4 boards per contest. She ranks fifth all-time in career rebounds this season with 775 rebounds and moved into the career top 10 with 74 blocks.
  • Kayla Thigpen has scored in double figures in seven of the last 10 games, including a career-best 20 points at Memphis, and is UCF’s second leading scorer on the season at 9.5 points per game.

 

War on I-4

  • Announced in Sept. 2016, the Knights and Bulls compete in the War on I-4 rivalry series - a yearly scored competition highlighted by the annual Thanksgiving weekend clash between the universities’ football teams.
  • The competition features scoring in head-to-head contests between all of the universities’ sports teams. Sports that don’t compete directly against each other accrue points for best conference postseason performance.
  • UCF’s win over the Bulls in Tampa on Jan. 8 gave the Knights a 27-6 lead in the 2018-19 edition. UCF also earned victories from volleyball, men’s soccer and football, along with a higher finish by its cross country team at The American Championship.
  • The Knights won the 2016-17 War on I-4, 51-33, and won last year’s edition 49-35.

 

Celebrating the Ladies

  • National Girls and Women in Sports Day is Feb. 6. UCF Athletics began a week-long celebration of women in sports on Thursday.
  • On Jan. 31, UCF hosted a breakfast to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day at the Country Club of Orlando.
  • Prior to Sunday’s game, UCF Athletics will be hosting a free youth clinic.

 

Scouting the Opponents

  • UCF and South Florida will meet for the 33rd time on the hardwood. The Bulls hold a 25-7 lead in the all-time series, but the Knights picked up a 62-49 win in Tampa on Jan. 8.
  • The Bulls are 11-10 overall this season, with a 2-5 mark in The American.
  • Sydni Harvey leads the Bulls with 12.9 points per game and has a team-high 65 assists.
  • Shae Leverett leads USF with 7.5 rebounds per game, while Tamara Henshaw averages 71 boards per contest.

 

Next up, UCF begins a two-game swing with a trip to Dallas on Feb. 9. The Knights will face SMU at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN3.
