Knights Fall At No. 2/3 UConn

HARTFORD, Conn. (UCFKnights.com) ? The UCF women's basketball team suffered its first conference loss of the season, dropping a 93-57 decision to No. 2/3 UConn on Sunday afternoon in the XL Center.

UCF (17-3, 6-1 The American) and UConn (18-1, 7-0 The American) entered the contest as the last two teams undefeated in The American, but the home squad was able to come away with the victory.

The Knights fell behind 29-14 after the first quarter. UCF poured in 22 points in the second quarter, but the Huskies shot 73.3 percent from the floor to take a 61-36 lead into halftime. The Knights held UConn to just 17.6 percent from the field in the third quarter, but entered the final frame trailing 74-46. The Huskies outscored the Knights 19-11 in the fourth quarter to capture the 93-57 win.

A trio of Knights finished in double figures, led by Kayla Thigpen's 14 points. For the second game in a row, Nyala Shuler posted a season-high in the scoring column, hitting a career-best three three-pointers on her way to 13 points. Sianni Martin added a season-high 13 points.

Brittany Smith pulled down a career-best eight rebounds, collecting four offensive boards. Kay Kay Wright dished out a team-high four assists and joined Martin with a trio of steals. ?

UCF returns to CFE Arena on Jan. 30 to host Houston. Originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, the teams will now tip off at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.
