UCF Heads to UConn

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – On Sunday, the two remaining unbeaten teams in the American Athletic Conference will go head-to-head as the UCF women’s basketball heads to No. 2/3 UConn.

 

The Knights (15-2, 6-0 The American) and the Huskies (17-1, 6-0 The American) will tip off at 4 p.m. in the XL Center. The game will air on ESPN2.

Notes to Know

  • For the third consecutive week, UCF picked up more votes in both the AP Top 25 and the USA Today/WBCA Top 25 polls.
  • The Knights enter Sunday on a seven-game win streak and are off to the program’s first 6-0 start in The American.
  • Kay Kay Wright leads the Knights with 18.7 points per game, 3.6 assists per contest and 1.8 steals per game.
  • Nyala Shuler registered her second double-double of the season in the 61-58 overtime win at ECU, scoring a season-best 10 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. She also collected a season-high four steals.
  • Shuler is UCF’s leading rebounder with 7.7 boards per contest. She ranks fifth all-time in career rebounds this season with 757 rebounds and moved into the career top 10 with 74 blocks.
  • Kayla Thigpen has scored in double figures in five of the last eight games, including a career-best 20 points at Memphis, and is UCF’s second leading scorer on the season at 8.9 points per game.

 

Scouting the Opponents

  • UCF and UConn will meet for the ninth time on the hardwood since becoming members of The American. The Huskies hold an 8-0 lead in the all-time series.
  • The five-time defending conference champion Huskies are 17-1 overall this season, with a 6-0 mark in The American.
  • Five Huskies average double figures, led by Katie Lou Samuelson’s 19.0 points per game.
  • Napheesa Collier is averaging a double-double, with 18.4 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per contest. She also has a team-high 25 blocks.
  • Crystal Dangerfield leads UConn with 100 assists and 24 steals on the season.

Next up, UCFreturns to CFE Arena to host Houston on Jan. 30. Originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip, the game has been moved up to 6 p.m. and will stream on ESPN3.
