Wright Named Player of the Week

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Following another dominant week leading UCF to a pair of victories, Kay Kay Wright was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

The Orlando native took over in the final seconds of the game against Cincinnati, driving by her defender and laying the shot in with five ticks left on the clock. She then stepped up on defense, snatching the ball away from the Bearcats to secure a 56-55 victory for the Knights.

Wright’s 25-point performance against Cincinnati was her second 20-point outing of the week. She also tallied a game-high 20 points to lead UCF to a 62-49 War on I-4 victory over South Florida on Jan. 8.

She averaged 22.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game on the week.

The point guard has been solid all season, reaching double figures in all 16 of UCF’s games with seven 20-point outings in 2018-19.

She is second in the league in scoring, averaging 19.3 points per game, which puts her just behind Katie Lou Samuelson’s 19.6 points per contest. Her 83.1 percent shooting from the free throw line ranks third, and her 3.7 assists per game are the seventh-best among league players.

Nationally, Wright ranks 28th in final points with 309 on the season and is 33rd in points per game. Her 69 made free throws ranks 34th in the country, while her 111 made field goals ranks 36th.

The junior is also climbing the UCF career charts. Her five assists last week pushed her career total to 327, which ties her with Angelica Mealing (2007-11) for fifth all-time at UCF. She also ranks ninth on the career charts with 166 steals as a Knight.

Wright joins Aliyah Gregory (Feb. 20, 2017) and Zykira Lewis (Nov. 17, 2014) to give UCF a trio of American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honorees.

UCF continues its home stand, hosting Tulsa on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
