Knights Top Dukes, Extend Win Streak

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 71-63 victory at Duquesne on Wednesday evening.

 

UCF (8-1) jumped out to a 24-12 lead over the Dukes (4-4) at the end of the first quarter and took a 35-32 edge into halftime. Duquesne took a four-point advantage early in the third quarter, but the Knights responded to claim a 54-49 lead heading into the final frame. The Black and Gold held the edge for the entire fourth quarter to sweep the road trip.

 

Kay Kay Wright led a trio of Knights in double figures, posting her fourth 20-point performance with 21. She added seven assists and collected five rebounds.

 

Nyala Shuler became the first Knight with a double-double this season – pulling down a season-high 14 rebounds while shooting 4-for-4 from the floor en route to 10 points. Jamesha Paul added 11 points.

 

Stepping Up

  • Diamond Battles came off the bench to score a career-best nine points.
  • The rookie dished out a pair of assists and collected two steals in 15 minutes of action.
  • The Winter Haven, Fla., native went 5-for-6 from the free throw line and pushed UCF back in front for good with 3:45 remaining in the third quarter.

 

Kay Kay Climbing the Charts

  • Kay Kay Wright dished out seven assists in the win – tying her season best.
  • She bumped her career total to 306, passing Shayla Smith for eighth on the UCF career chart.
  • She became just the fourth Knight in program history to have at least 300 career assists and 150 career steals, joining Chariya Davis (1995-99), Aisha Patrick (2008-12) and Marcie Swiley (1979-83).

 

Historic Start

  • At 8-1, UCF is off to its best start since 1984-85, the program’s first year playing in Division I.
  • The Knights have scored at least 70 points in seven games.
  • UCF is averaging 71.2 points per game – the most in the three-year tenure of UCF head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson.

 

The Knights return to CFE Arena to host Pacific on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. The game will serve as the 4th Annual UCF Basketball Toy Drive. Fans who donate a toy will receive free admission.
