ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Amid their collegiate tournament weekends, the UCF men’s tennis team has been hard at work gaining professional points by competing in the USA Futures Series.
During their collegiate slate, Gabriel DeCamps took gold in the singles main draw at the Southern Intercollegiates. By defeating two higher seeded players, Alan Rubio won the championship title in the singles main draw at the Bedford Cup. After falling in the first round, Mikhail Sokolovskiy came back and defeated Rana-Roop Singh Bhular from Florida State to win the singles consolation title at the ITA Regionals.
The Knights opened their Futures Series at the F27 Futures on Oct. 8 in Houston, TX.
Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi, the No. 2 seed, lost to Nicholas Bybel in a three set battle of 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 in the first round of the qualifiers.
DeCamps, the No. 13 seed, won his first round in the qualifiers 6-2, 6-4 against Dejon Birens, and then defeated Youssef Rajia 6-4, 6-2 in his second round. DeCamps then lost to Alan Kohen, the No. 4 seed, 1-6, 6-7(3).
Trey Hilderbrand fell to Noah Schachter 3-6, 4-6 in his round first qualifiers.
Manoel Alencar, Hilderbrand, and DeCamps went on to compete in the F29 Futures in Birmingham, Ala. that began on Oct. 29.
Alencar breezed through his first round in the qualifiers by defeating Willian Benoit 6-0, 6-0. He came up short in a three set match to Patrick Harper, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, in the second round qualifiers.
In the first round of the qualifying draw, Hilderbrand fell short to Jan Soereen Hain 6-7(4), 6-4, 2-6
DeCamps, the No. 6 seed, won his first round in the qualifiers 6-2, 6-1 against Kooros Ghasemi. DeCamps breezed through the second round qualifiers and won 0-6, 0-6 against Matteo De Vincentis, and then defeated Dragos Constantin Ignat 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 in the third round qualifiers. He played Morgan Dill in the fourth round qualifiers and won 6-2, 6-2 to earn his ticket into the main draw.
DeCamps continued into the first round of the main draw. He went up against Justin Butsch, the No. 6 seed of the tournament, but fell short 6-7(5), 3-6.
Juan, the No. 6 seed, competed in the main draw and won his first round 6-2, 6-2 against Cannon Kingsley, but got defeated by Timo Stodder 2-6, 6-7(1) in the second round.
The Black and Gold will head to Niceville, Fla. on Nov. 1 to compete in the USA F30 Futures. The F31 and F32 Futures, both starting on Nov. 8, will follow after.
