TAMPA, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women’s soccer team battled No. 14/18 South Florida, but a late goal lifted the Bulls to a 1-0 victory at Corbett Stadium on Friday evening.
The Knights (9-6-1, 6-3 The American) held a potent USF (13-2, 8-1 The American) offense in check. In just her second game back after helping Jamaica qualify for its first FIFA Women’s World Cup, Konya Plummer was solid for the Knights on the back line, keeping the Bulls off the scoreboard through 80 minutes of play.
The Bulls broke the scoreless draw in the 82nd minute as a from Evelyne Viens shot sailed in the upper right corner for the game-winner.
UCF’s best chance came in the 36th minute, when Stefanie Sanders maneuvered by the USF defense. Her shot hit the inside of the right post before ricocheting out.
With time winding down, the Knights picked up their offensive intensity. Plummer moved up, nearly having a breakaway before the ball was knocked out. UCF took a trio of corner kicks in the final three minutes but was unable to find the equalizer before the final buzzer.
USF picked up six points in the War on I-4 rivalry series, cutting UCF’s lead to 15-6.
A Memphis victory over Tulsa on Friday night slid the Knights into the third seed for the American Athletic Conference tournament. UCF will face the No. 6 seed in a first round matchup on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The complete bracket will be finalized on Sunday.
