Mazzuchi Reaches Quarters at ITA Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF men’s tennis team continued its pursuit of a third individual title in three tournaments this fall with a solid day three at the 2018 ITA Southeast Regional Championship at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Freshman Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi reached the quarterfinals of the main singles draw after a pair of convincing wins. The Argentina international cruised in his second-round contest against Oliver Stuart form Alvaro Fernandez Horta from FAU, 6-0, 6-1. He followed that up with a straight sets victory over Alex Knaff from Florida State in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-4. The freshman will face No. 1 seed Johannes Ingildsen from Florida on Monday for a spot in the semifinals.

Fellow rookie Trey Hilderbrand made it to the round of 16 with a gritty three set win over Oliver Stuart from Mercer, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The Texas native came up short in the ensuing match against Jan Zielinski, the No. 2 seed, 6-3, 6-2.

The rookies teamed up to reach the quarterfinals of the doubles flight with an 8-3 win over Ignacio Garcia and Jason Legall of FAU. The freshmen will see Francisco Bastias and Bojan Jankulovski from Miami on Monday.

In the singles consolation draw, Manoel Alencar upended FAU’s Thomas Guy in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(6). The Brazilian international later fell to Bailey Showers of Georgia State, 5-7, 7-6(4), 10-6 in the quarterfinals.

Mikhail Sokolovskiy bounced back from a tough Saturday to post a pair of wins. He opened with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Britton Johnston of Georgia, before taking down Georgia State’s Kevin Huynh 7-5, 6-4. The Russian international will meet Roberts Grinvalds from Georgia State, who edged Vasyl Kiselyov 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16, in the quarters on Monday.

Alan Rubio punched his ticket to the quarterfinals on Monday. The Mexico international needed went the distance with Kaya Gore from Miami and won 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. Rubio needed two sets to take down Juan Montes of FGCU, 7-6, 6-1. The sophomore will take on Fermin Calvo Barcelo of Kennesaw State on Monday.
