ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF men’s tennis team battled on the second day of the Bedford Cup at the UCF Collegiate Tennis Center at the USTA National Campus.
Sophomore Alan Rubio reached the semifinals of the main singles draw. The Mexico native, playing as the No. 6 seed, needed three sets to edge Gabriel Sidney from FAU, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Rubio will face fellow Knight Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi, who is unattached this weekend, in the semifinals on Sunday. Mazzuchi bested sophomore Mikhail Sokolovskiy in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 7-6(5).
Freshmen Manoel Alencar and Trey Hilderbrand saw their tournaments come to a close in the consolation draws of the main singles flight. Sophomore Vasyl Kiselyov fell in the consolation draw of the second singles flight on Saturday to Enzo Le Seguillon from Florida State.
The doubles team of Rubio and Hilderbrand came up short in their quarterfinal matchup against Felipe Escobar and Mateo Ruiz from FGCU, 8-5. Alencar and Sokolovskiy reached the semis of the consolation draw with a 6-3 win over Chase Ferguson and Sergio Garcia-Montesa from South Florida, but they were stopped by Alberto Barraso Campos and Jakub Wojcik of USF.
The Knights will wrap up the Bedford Cup on Sunday.
