Defensive Distinction

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Following its first shutout victory of the season, two members of the UCF women’s soccer team were recognized by the American Athletic Conference for their defensive play. Senior Vera Varis was named Goalkeeper of the Week and senior Emily Tipton was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week.

The duo led the UCF (1-2-0) defense in a 2-0 victory at Miami (3-3-0) on Sunday evening.

Varis kept Miami off the scoreboard and showed her skill set in the victory. Despite the scoresheet showing just four saves for the Vantaa, Finland native, she snatched several balls before Miami was able to put them on frame. Varis played all 90 minutes for the Knights to pick up her first win in goal this season.

Earning her third start of the season, Tipton played a key role on UCF’s back line that limited Miami to just five shots in the contest. She played all 90 minutes in the victory for the Knights.

Varis earned the second Goalkeeper of the Week accolade of her career, while Tipton collected her first Defensive Player of the Week.
