ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF senior Vera Varis was named as one of the candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award on Wednesday.
The goalkeeper is one of 30 women’s soccer candidates and is one of two candidates from the American Athletic Conference.
The Vantaa, Finland native has already completed her undergraduate degree and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in biomedicine and chemistry. She carries a 4.0 GPA in grad school and earned President's Honor Roll accolades in the spring.
Varis ranks among the top 10 in career saves at UCF. In 2017, she was named the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year after allowing just one goal in league play and four goals all season.
The 2018 American Athletic Conference Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, Varis was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for the most prestigious individual award in college soccer in August.
UCF Women's Soccer is no stranger to the award. Former All-American forward Tishia Jewell won the Senior CLASS Award in 2012, and former All-American goalkeeper Aline Reis was named to the Senior CLASS First Team in 2011.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on an official ballot, which will be distributed through a nationwide voting system. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Women’s College Cup championship in December.
