ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Gearing up for the 2018 season, the No. 16 UCF women's soccer team hosts Wyoming in an exhibition contest Thursday at 7 p.m. Admission is free at the UCF Soccer Complex.
The Knights and the Cowgirls meet for the first time on the pitch.
UCF earned numerous accolades on Aug. 7, as the Knights were tabbed as the No. 16 team in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and the preseason favorite to repeat as the American Athletic Conference champion. Vera Varis, the 2017 Goalkeeper of the Year, earned the 2018 preseason nod to earn the accolade. Varis and Dina Orschmann were preseason all-conference selections.
The Knights return 11 members of its squad who clocked time in at least 10 matches last season, while welcoming 12 newcomers to the roster. In addition to seven rookies from the Sunshine State, UCF also added experience in Samantha Chung, a senior transfer from Florida.
Wyoming returns six starters and 16 letterwinners from last season's squad that went 8-9-2 overall and 4-6-1 in the Mountain West. In all, the squad consists of six seniors, five juniors, five sophomores and 13 freshmen.
In addition to Thursday’s contest, UCF will make the trip to Jacksonville to face North Florida in a noon exhibition on Aug. 12. The Knights officially open the 2018 campaign on Aug. 19, hosting FGCU at the UCF Soccer Complex at 6 p.m.
