ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – One week into her collegiate career, UCF Volleyball freshman McKenna Melville wasted no time earning her first accolade as the first American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the 2018 season.
Melville was named to the Sunshine State Classic All-Tournament Team after leading the Knights with three games in double-figure kills and a pair of double-doubles.
“For a player that we recruited as a libero, this is just the start of many great things to come for McKenna,” head coach Todd Dagenais said. “She will continue to be a leader of a well-balanced team with high dreams and aspirations. With her versatility on and off the court, the sky is her limit.”
The Eagan, Minn., native flew out of the gates in her first collegiate start with 19 kills on 55 swings for a .273 average against FGCU. She also led the way defensively with 16 digs.
The rookie followed that performance up with a 16-kill outing at a .406 clip at the net, along with one solo block and 13 digs, against FAU.
Melville saved her best for last with a .444 clip on 20 kills against host Miami in the season finale. She became the first Knight to touch 20 kills in a three-set match since 2016.
The freshman finished the weekend with a .358 clip at the net and 5.5 kills and 3.5 digs per set.
The Knights will hit the road for the Bulby Invitational in Gainesville this weekend. UCF will face Louisville, USC and Florida.
