1978 Volleyball Team - AIAW Champions - Class of 2015
UCF's 1978 volleyball team captured the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) Division II National Championship, going 55-0 on the year. The Knights posted a 39-0 record in the regular season before breezing through the State Championship Tournament and the Southern Regional Tournament with nine straight wins.
UCF then hosted the AIAW National Championship, delivering five consecutive match sweeps and a pair of nailbiters over Hawaii-Hilo to claim the title.
The Knights had four All-Americans: Karin Fischer, Sharon Koskey, Laura Smith and Celestine Wilson. Meanwhile, Koskey, Wilson and Tammy Cipcic were on the Regional All-Tournament Team
That squad helped set a program record with 69 straight wins from 1978-79.
UCF's head coach that season was Lucy McDaniel, who was the program's first head coach from 1975-78. McDaniel (2006) and Smith (1999) are current members of the UCF Athletics Hall of Fame.
The 1978 AIAW Banner was raised in The Venue after the facility was renovated for the 2008 season, helping celebrate the 30th anniversary of the national title.
