ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF pitcher Thad Ward was named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
The junior came out of the bullpen in the series opener on Saturday night for the final four innings and picked up his fifth win of the year.
Ward stepped on the mound in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and no outs. The righty worked out of the jam without allowing a run, including a pair of strikeouts. He also stranded a runner at second in the seventh inning. Ward finished with seven strikeouts and one hit over four innings of work.
The Fort Myers, Fla., native has proved to be one of the most reliable long relievers on the team this season. Ward currently has a 3-1 record out of the bullpen with a 1.88 ERA and 41 punchouts. Combined with his five starts this season, the righty is 5-3 on the year with a 2.81 ERA and a team-high 73 strikeouts.
Ward and the Knights will head to West Palm Beach on Tuesday night to face FAU at FITTEAM Ballpark of The Palm Beaches at 6:30 p.m.
