ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Kyle Cox spent his undergraduate years competing on UCF's men's soccer team while studying biomedical sciences for pre-med. This May, Kyle became the first student-athlete to graduate from the UCF Medical School, and will soon move with his wife to Montgomery, Ala., for a residency in orthopedic surgery at University of South Alabama Hospitals.
"I've spent so many years in athletics, I think like an athlete and I think that will help me relate to my patients," he said. "Orthopedic surgery will allow me to help athletes get back on the field and help patients gain mobility so they can get back to what they enjoy."
Cox is proud to follow in his father's footsteps as a part of the UCF men's soccer team and attending Medical School.
"To be able to carry his legacy as a Men's Soccer student-athlete, but also as a medical student is an honor," he said. "To be able to carry the legacy of our medical program to the field of medicine is a very proud accomplishment of mine, and it carries a lot of excitement for me and my family.".
Cox is thankful for the administration in the athletic department, his former teammates, and his coaches who helped him achieve this life goal. He is also thankful to UCF President Dr. John C. Hitt, who spoke at his graduation.
"It's hard to express how grateful I am to have Dr. Hitt as our university president," Cox said. "He's been president the whole time I've been alive. My life has been so shaped by his leadership."
