ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF women's tennis senior Monica Matias was honored by the American Athletic Conference as the Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday.
This honor is given to a student-athlete in each AAC-sponsored sport, based on academic credentials, athletic accolades and accomplishments, as well as volunteer service to the community. To be eligible student-athletes must have a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and have attained junior academic standing.
This marks the second straight year that Matias has earned the distinction from The American.
A native of Moca, Puerto Rico, Matias has a 3.841 GPA as a human communications major and will graduate in May. The senior has been a three-time selection to The American All-Academic Team and President's Honor Roll.
Matias has been an active member in the community, volunteering her time with Relay for Life, Community Garden Build, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Student-Athlete Leadership Institute, as well as spent time with Feeding Children Everywhere to send food to areas affected by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.
On the court, Matias has played a vital role in the Knights' 8-2 start to the year. The senior is 6-2 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles action with two wins against top-50 pairings.
Last summer, Matias guided Puerto Rico to Americas Group I promotion in the 2017 Fed Cup for the first time since 2010. She was one of five players in the world to be named a Fed Cup MVP.
