ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Sophomore Alea White and UCF Softball prevailed in a pitcher's battle Monday afternoon at UCF Softball Complex, defeating Hofstra, 1-0, in eight innings. Junior Cassady Brewer drove in the game-winning run with a single to center.
White, who garnered her fourth win of the year, was clicking from the start of the game, mowing down seven batters and holding the Pride to only two hits all game.
The first came on a double in the third and the runner advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, but White and the Knights didn't fret. The ensuing batter chopped a grounder to Aubrey Johnson, who fielded and tossed out the runner at home with Brewer swiping the tag.
It was the last scoring chance either team had until the bottom of the eighth when UCF freshman Denali Schappacher reached third after drawing a two-out walk and rounding the bases on a bunt single by Megan Greenwell.
With their first runner in scoring position all game, the Knights knew they couldn't spoil this opportunity, and the right person was up to bat - Cassady Brewer.
On a one-two pitch, Brewer rocketed a shot to dead center, just out of the Hofstra fielder's reach and dropped on the warning track. The hit easily plated Schappacher for the lone run of the game and gave UCF an extra-inning victory.
