ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Maria Martinez was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday after a perfect weekend on the court, helping the Knights secure two roads wins at SMU and Baylor.
The freshman was a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles play during the two matches.
Playing alongside fellow freshman Ksenia Kuznetsova, the rookie duo easily handled their match against SMU, cruising to a 6-1 win to open the night against the Mustangs.
Martinez, playing at No. 2, would then go on to defeat Anzhelika Shapovalova in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to notch her second win of the match.
The Benidorm, Spain, native continued her strong play against No. 16 Baylor Sunday. The Martinez-Kuznetsova duo clinched the doubles point against the Bears with a 6-2 victory.
Martinez finished her night in a singles battle at No. 2. After already winning the first set 6-4, she was pushed to a tiebreaker and ultimately prevailed to clinch the match for the Knights.
Martinez is 4-3 in singles play and 6-1 in doubles action on the year.
The Knights (6-1, 1-0) will next travel to Texas to take on TCU on Feb. 23 and Texas A&M on Feb. 25.
