ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – As the UCF women's tennis team prepares for its 2018 campaign, senior Moinca Matias received some international recognition for her time representing Puerto Rico. Matias was named a 2017 Fed Cup MVP, one of just five players in the world to receive that distinction.

In order to be named an MVP by the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, a player must step when her nation needed it most.

Matias was one of the top performers on Team Puerto Rico in the Americas Group II in July. The native of Moca went a perfect 3-0 in singles action, dropping just one set in the tournament. Matias won 7-5, 6-1 in the Group II Play-Off to punch Puerto Rico's first ticket to the Group I stage since 2010.

The senior joined some elite company as the No. 4 MVP for the worldwide event. Zhang Ling (Ranked 331 - WTA) guided Hong Kong to Asia/Oceana Group I promotion. Bianca Andreescu (189 – WTA), at age 16, lifted Canada to World Group II for the 2018 season. Elise Mertens (35 – WTA) went undefeated as Belgium reached the World Group Play-Off. CoCo Vandeweghe (10 – WTA) played a major role in the United States winning its first Fed Cup since 2010.

Matias and the Knights will open the 2018 season on Jan. 19 against South Carolina at the USTA National Campus.
