WACO, Texas (UCFKnights.com) – The American Football Coaches Association announced its 2017 AFCA FBS Coaches' All-America Teams on Wednesday, and among the honorees was UCF senior Shaquem Griffin.
One of just six linebackers to be named to the AFCA's All-America First or Second Team, Griffin is the first UCF player to make the AFCA list since 1987, when Eddie O'Brien and Bernard Ford both received the accolades.
Griffin earned the Second Team honors after lead UCF to a 12-0 campaign, an American Athletic Conference East Division Title and The American Championship with an overtime win over Memphis.
The Knights finished the 2017 season ranked 10th in the nation in both the AP and Coaches Poll, earning a berth to the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Jan. 1.
Griffin finished 2017 with 62 tackles, and led the Knights with 10.0 tackles-for-loss and 5.5 sacks. The redshirt senior also forced two fumbles, recovered two, broke up three passes and had one interception.
He scored his first career touchdown when he picked up a fumble and returned it 20 yards in UCF's win over Austin Peay.
