LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women's tennis team will add to its silverware on Sunday with an all Knights doubles final at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic. On Saturday, the Knights dominated their quarterfinal matchups, while Monica Matias punched her ticket to the singles final.
Monica Matias and Natalia Serrano will go up against the freshman pairing of Ksenia Kuznetsova and Maria Martinez for the tournament title.
Matias and Serrano reached the championship after upending No. 1 seed Maria Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova from Oklahoma State, 8-3. Kuznetsova and Martinez, the No. 2 seed, cruised to an 8-1 win in their semifinal contest against Ana Roman Dominquez and Alexandria Mjos of USF.
Matias needed a pair of victories in singles action to reach the title round. The Moca, Puerto Rico, native defeated Ashley Bongart from Liberty in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-0, before outlasting Florida's Katie Kubitz in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Matias will face UF's No. 1 seed Josie Kuhlman on Sunday for the tournament title.
The No. 2 seeded Martinez fell in her quarterfinals matchup to Kubitz, 6-2, 6-2. Serrano also started her day in the quarters of the singles tournament, but dropped her decision to the No. 4 seeded Guinart.
