TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF men's tennis team will compete for a pair of singles titles on Saturday at the Bedford Cup, hosted by Florida State.
On Friday, Mikhail Sokolovskiy and Vasyl Kiselyov won their semifinal matches in singles action to reach the finals in two separate flights.
The No. 1 seeded Sokolovskiy opened the day with a three-set thriller against Ignacio Garcia of FAU. The rookie moved on with a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory. In the semis, Sokolovskiy rebounded from a first set defeat to Christian Langmo of Miami in the Singles A Flight. The freshman responded by taking down his ACC foe with a 1-6, 6-3, 10-5 win.
The two victories set up a showdown for Sokolovskiy with the No. 7 Chase Wood from the host Florida State, on Saturday. Danny Kerznerman played Wood in the quarterfinals, but was forced to retire while tied at 2-2 in the second set.
In the Singles B Flight, Kiselyov, the No. 4 seed, downed Austin Bates from FGCU, 7-5, 6-2, in the semis. The Ukrainian international will face FAU's No. 3 seeded Arthur Stefani with the title on the line.
Sokolovskiy could not pull off the sweep of Langmo in doubles action. The freshman and Kerznerman dropped their quarterfinals contest to Langmo and Dane Dunlap, 6-2. Kiselyov and Enrique Paya also fell in the quarters in a 6-2 defeat to the No. 3 seeded team of Wood and Alex Knaff.
