ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF senior Matias Pyysalo and junior Andreas Steineger were selected as the American Athletic Conference Offense and Defense Players of the Week, respectively. The league announced the weekly winners on Monday.
The Knights stretched their unbeaten streak six games by notching a pair of shutouts over FAU, 3-0, and Temple, 1-0, last week. Pyysalo scored a goal in each match, including the game-winning marker in the 50th minute on senior day vs. the Owls.
Pyysalo captured his second-consecutive weekly accolade fro the league and the fourth of his career. The Helsinki, Finland, native ranks sixth nationally in goals (0.85) and fourth (2.08) in points per game.
Steineger played a key role as a center back to help the Knights post consecutive clean sheets. The Oslo, Norway, native is a leader along the backline that only allowed opponents to generate 15 shots in the past two matches.
UCF has earned an offensive honor three times this season by Cal Jennings and Pyysalo (2), while Jonathan Dean and Steineger have received defense accolades.
