ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – Mike Hughes has spent little time making a name for himself as a Knight, impressing on both defense and special teams as No. 14/15 UCF is out to its best start in program history. On Monday, Hughes was rewarded for his play, earning The American Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.
In a 77-33 rout of visiting Austin Peay, Hughes was responsible for one of many highlights for the Knights when he returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.
It was Hughes first kick return for a touchdown, but it wasn't his first score of the year. The junior scored on an interception return at Maryland and took a punt return back for a touchdown against ECU. With his kickoff return for a touchdown this past weekend, Hughes became the only UCF football player to ever score on an interception, a punt return and a kick return.
This marked Hughes' second weekly honor from The American and he is one of four Knights to be named Player of the Week this season. McKenzie Milton (twice) and Adrian Killins have been named Offensive Player of the Week, while Matthew Wright was previously honored as Special Teams Player of the Week.
Milton was also named to The American's Weekly Honor Roll on Monday for his performance against the Governors. The UCF quarterback went 24-of-26 for 275 yards, throwing three touchdowns and rushing for another.
