ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – Having taken over the UCF football program following a 0-12 campaign in 2015, in just one season and five games head coach Scott Frost has brought the Knights back into the Top 25. This week Frost was named to both the 2017 Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award and Dodd Trophy Coach of the Year watch lists.
Frost has UCF at 5-0 for the first time since 1988 and ranked 20th in both the Coaches and Associated Press national polls. The Knights lead the nation in scoring with 50.6 points per game and are fifth in total offense, totaling 547.2 yards per contest.
In its 32nd year, the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award recognizes the nation's top college football coaches for their contributions both on and off the field. It is selected after all bowl games are concluded and is voted on by the National Sports Media Association.
The Dodd Trophy celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity - the three pillars of legendary coach Boddy Dodd's philosophy.
Only 20 coaches around the country were named to each watch list, with 17 appearing on both. Others on both lists include Alabama's Nick Saban, Clemson's Dabo Swinney, and Notre Dame's Brian Kelly. Frost was the only coach from The American to appear on both lists. Mike Norvell of Memphis and Charlie Strong of USF were on the "Bear" Bryant list, while Ken Niumatalolo of Navy was named to the Dodd list.
