Thursday #FrostBytes

ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – UCF head football coach Scott Frost is doing everything in his power to remind his team what got them to their current level of success. He doesn't want complacency to become as big an opponent as East Carolina, Navy or any other upcoming matchup on the schedule.

Frost made his usual Thursday rounds with the media, speaking briefly after Thursday practice and also appearing on 96.9 The Game's Open Mike with Mike Bianchi and Brandon Kravitz earlier in the morning.

"We're still doing good things," Frost said after practice. "I want our team to remember that we have to keep improving. Everybody around the country keeps getting better. Our best has been good enough so far, but our best needs to keep getting better. I'm seeing it most of the time, but I don't want our team to stray from that."

According to Frost, the No. 21 and 22 rankings for his team this week haven't been a distraction, but with a 1-5 ECU team coming into Spectrum Stadium against his undefeated squad, there are concerns.

"The one thing we've got to guard against is overconfidence," Frost said. "We're ranked high, statistically, on both sides of the ball. The guys have had success, but we can't start thinking we're going to show up have that success against anybody. This is a good team coming in here. They can put up a lot of points. They've been ahead of Virginia Tech and other people early on in games. We have to earn what we get around here. We've earned it through hard work so far and we need to keep earning it."

There was more of that discussion on Open Mike, as well. Frost said both successful teams and unsuccessful teams need to avoid believing what is being said and written about them. He used a colorful, aromatic analogy to drive the point home.

"Every coach is fighting the same battle," he said. "If you're not winning, you're trying to build up confidence. If you are winning, you're trying to keep from getting overconfident. The reality of it is, we stink, everybody stinks. You have to stink less on any given day than the next team. You can't just flat out, come out and tell your team 'Yeah, you guys stink' to get them to keep playing hard and being hungry. You have to find a middle ground in there. Usually, the truth is somewhere in between the praise and blame that you get."

Frost referenced his former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne with regard to trying to keep his team on an even keel.

"He said 'Never let your highs be too high and your lows too low,'" Frost said. "That's the truth. It really helped me a lot through college. I had to learn not to read anything, whether it was good or bad. I had to really just block all that out."

It's Homecoming week at UCF. Bianchi and Kravitz tried to pin Frost down on his Spirit Splash intentions. While it sounded like he may have committed to splashing this year at last year's event, the Knights' head man was keeping his cards close to the vest.

"Did I say for sure?" Frost said. "We'll see. It's a neat tradition. I know a lot of us will be in attendance. We'll see if I have my snorkel out."
