HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF Women's Tennis freshmen Maria Martinez and Ksenia Kuznetsova picked up some valuable experience this week at the ITF $15,000 Hilton Head Island, S.C.
After reaching the finals of the doubles draw at last week's ITF $15,000 Charleston, S.C., the duo competed in the singles draw in Hilton Head in just their second tournament as Knights.
Martinez opened the week with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Emma Allen in the first round of the qualifying draw on Sunday afternoon. On Monday, Martinez dominated Taylor Love, 6-1, 6-1.
For the second straight week, the Spanish international squared off with Italy's Francesca Fusinato with a big to the main draw on the line. Martinez played Fusinato closer that last week, but dropped the match, 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday.
Kuznetsova reached the main draw of the ITF $15,000 Charleston, S.C., last week. This week, the Russian international started the tournament in the first round of the main draw against Caty McNally. Kuznetsova could not defeat the seventh-seeded McNally, falling 6-1, 6-1.
The duo will be back in action next week at the ITF $25,000 Florence, S.C.
