CHARLESTON, S.C./TAMPA, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Playing two separate tournaments in two different states, the UCF women's tennis team was perfect on Friday, winning all five matches.
The Knights had a pair of players competing in the doubles semifinals of the ITF $15,000 in Charleston, S.C., while three others opened action at the Bedford Cup in Tampa.
In South Carolina, Ksenia Kuznetsova and Maria Martinez defeated Nicole Coopersmith and Kariann Pierre-Louis, 6-3, 4-6 (10-7), to reach the finals. Competing in their first tournament as Knights, the rookie duo will face Chloe Beck and Emma Navarro on Saturday.
Natalia Serrano, Emilia Granstrom and Monica Matias opened their fall slate on Friday at the Bedford Cup, an annual meeting of all the Division I programs in Florida.
Serrano downed USF's Evelyne Tiron in the quarterfinals of the Gabrine Muguruza Flight, 6-3, 6-2. The junior will face Sinead Lohan from Miami on Saturday morning.
In the second flight, Monica Matias topped Jessica Cortes from USF, 6-2, 6-4, to move on to the semifinals against Irina Karangozishvili with a bid to the Venus Williams Flight on the line.
Granstrom needed three sets to outlast Ulyana Shirokova of Miami. After dropping the first set, Granstrom powered back to take the final two sets to win, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, setting up a matchup with Luise Intert from North Florida on Saturday in the Madison Keys Flight.
Matias and Serrano paired up for doubles action in the top flight. The duo cruised to a 6-1 win over Sinead Lohan and Ana Madcur from Miami. The Knights will face Vicky Geurinchx and Arijana Korac of Stetson on Saturday.
