FLUSHING, N.Y. (UCFKnights.com) - Two members of the UCF men's tennis team entered the main draw of the 2017 U.S. Open Junior Tennis Championships. Freshmen Gabriel Decamps and Alan Rubio, who will join the Knights in January, were among the top juniors to qualify for singles and doubles play in New York.
"It's a big opportunity for Gabriel and Alan to compete in a Junior Grand Slam," Director of Tennis John Roddick said. "These guys work very hard for many years to get opportunities like this. We are excited to see how well they can do."
Decamps opened his US Open on Sunday. Facing the No. 10 seed Sebastian Baez of Argentina, Decamps earned an opening set win, but Baez rallied to take the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Decamps, the second ranked junior in Brazil and 54th in the world, recorded four aces in his first US Open appearance.
Rubio will go toe-to-toe with Clement Tabur of France on Monday morning at 11 a.m. Rubio is the 46th junior in the world and the first ranked in Mexico. In his first US Open match, Rubio will face the world's 74th best junior in Tabur.
Though his singles tournament is over, Decamps will be back in action on Monday in the doubles draw. The Knights will see a possible budding partnership between Rubio and Decamps, as the duo team up to face Ryan Goetz and Axel Nefve from the United States.
