ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) - With a number of off-the-field events on the horizon, the UCF football team held its first of four straight practices Tuesday leading up to Saturday's Fan Fest. After a day off, camp moved inside and moved quickly Tuesday morning, as the Knights continued to compete for opportunities on the field.
OTIS ANDERSON IMPRESSING
Offensive Coordinator and Wide Receivers Coach Troy Walters spoke to the media following Tuesday's practice and had a number of good things to say about freshman Otis Anderson.
"I love Otis man. First and foremost, he works his butt off. He's and effort guy. He's going to leave it all on the field. In the spring he was primarily a running back, but throughout the summer we thought that he could be even more valuable if he could learn the receiver position and have a dual role as a receiver and a running back. He's also going to help in the return game, so he's valuable. He keeps learning the offense and he's just a freshman." - Troy Walters

MORE FROM WALTERS
On the next few days...
"We've got another scrimmage tomorrow, and basically we've got four more practices to evaluate where guys are in terms of roles. We will have a pretty firm depth chart after these four practices, so I think guys have a sense of urgency to show the coaches what they can do."
On position battles...
"At my position - receivers - there are battles across the board. We know what Tre'Quan [Smith] can do, but everything else is up in the air, so I want to see guys competing. I want to see guys that know what they're asked to do and know the offense."
On the defense helping the offense...
"I've told the guys...our defense...they're awesome. They're going to create turnovers. They're going to create havoc. If we can just play fundamentally sound, not turn the ball over, and be efficient, then we're going to move the ball and we're going to win games."
CHINANDER CHIMES IN
Defensive Coordinator Erik Chinander on Tuesday's practice...
"Practice was good today. We kind of slowed down a little bit and went back to some basic defense. We lined up and played to see who had technique, see who could execute assignments, and see which of the young guys could emerge. I'm interested to watch the tape to see if anybody stood out."
On the cornerbacks...
"I don't know if it's that guys need to step up and separate themselves. Right now, it's just a really good fight. I think guys are playing a little better than we thought they would. The young guys are competing hard and some of the new guys are picking it up faster than I thought they would. Right now it's just four or five guys really battling."
MEDIA DAY ON WEDNESDAY
The Knights will host their annual media day Wednesday following morning practice. Coach Frost's press conference will take place at 11:45 a.m. in Assembly Hall at the Wayne Densch Center for Student-Athlete Leadership. A select group of student-athletes will then be available to the media at 12:30 p.m. in the Carl Black and Gold Cabana.
WRIGHT'S FLIGHT
This month's Knights Spotlight featured UCF placekicker Matthew Wright. Wright, who connected on 17-of-22 field goal attempts last year to rank as the seventh best single-season performance in program history - has a love outside of football. He is studying aerospace engineering at UCF and recently received a scholarship for his work as an Outstanding Burnett Honors College Student-Athlete.
