ITA Academic Awards

ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – For the seventh consecutive year, the UCF women's tennis team received the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team honor. The Knights posted a team GPA of 3.592 for the 2016-17 academic year, while Cortney Cesarini, Monica Matias and Natalia Serrano earned ITA Scholar-Athlete laurels.
 
Cesarini, who received her degree in advertising and public relations in May, recorded a 3.844 GPA to earn her second straight Scholar-Athlete award. The native of Lower Gwynedd, Penn., was a force in the middle of the lineup, tallying a 16-4 record, including a 10-3 mark at number four singles. Cesarini went 14-3 in doubles action with her playing partner Matias.
 
Notching 14 wins in singles and doubles as a junior, Matias finished the year with a 3.844 GPA for her second consecutive honor. The native of Puerto Rico dominated number singles for the Knights with an 11-3 record. Matias also competed for her homeland at the FedCup last weekend, guiding Puerto Rico to its first Group I promotion since 2010.
 
At the top of the lineup, Serrano went 14-7 on the season with a 10-4 record at number one singles. The Spanish international went 14-6 in doubles action at number two. Serrano received her second straight award with a 3.833 GPA.
 
The Knights also received public recognition through the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program for the sixth consecutive year in a row for posting a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score in the top 10 percent of the nation.
 
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to member program that post a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better. A player receives ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition for being a varsity letterwiner that has at least a 3.50 GPA in the current academic year.
