ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Four members of the UCF rowing team competed at the 2017 World Rowing U23 Championships July 19-23 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Rising sophomores Julie Poulsen and Claudia Destefani lined up next to each other in the women's eight race. Destefani, representing Italy, edged Poulsen, representing Denmark in the heats. Poulsen, rowing in the sixth seat, ultimately claimed the higher finish as her Danish crew took fifth in the A Final. Destefani, rowing in the fifth seat, helped her crew to a second place finish in the B Final.
Poulsen also rowed in the third seat of Denmark's Four. The crew finished fourth in the A Final on Saturday.
A pair of incoming freshmen also spent the weekend competing in Bulgaria. Caterina Di Fonzo was the stroke in the women's pair as Italy took fourth in the B Final. Ieva Medelinskaite was the stroke of the women's double scull, helping Lithuania win the C Final.
With four competing at the World U23s, the Knights had their largest representation at the championships.
