Maria Makes US Amateur Cut

Opens in a new window US Women's Amateur

ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – Rising UCF sophomore Maria Balcazar has qualified to take part in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

Balcazar tied for sixth at a qualifying tournament earlier this summer at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. She shot a 75 for the one-round stroke-play event. That finish was good enough for alternate status to the Championship. Balcazar learned earlier this week that she had indeed been selected to compete at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

The U.S. Women's Amateur is slated for Aug. 7-13 at the San Diego (Calif.) Country Club. A field of 156 amateur golfers will take part in two rounds of stroke play, with the top 64 moving on to match play.

Balcazar is was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year following the 2016-17 season and was also named to The American's all-conference team. She will rejoin the Knights when classes begin this fall and will be part of a UCF team that is coming off an American Athletic Conference championship.
