MUSKEGON, Mich. (UCFKnights.com) -- UCF sophomore Donnie Trosper won a U.S. Open Local Qualifying Tournament in his home state Monday.
The Canton, Mich. native took part in the tournament at Muskegon Country Club. According to MLive.com, Trosper played one practice round on Sunday, then went out on the Muskegon Country Club track and put up the lowest score of the day. He tallied just one bogey and the highlight of his round was a long, winding, 30-foot putt that went in for birdie on No. 9.
"I just decided to take one shot at a time. In my rounds prior to this, I was letting previous shots affect me. I just took it one shot at a time and kept a positive mindset," Trosper said. "I knew that I have just as much talent, if not more, than a lot of people out here. If I kept my mind in a good place in tough conditions, I would be successful."
Trosper tallied a 67 and won the 18-hole tournament by three strokes. He was the only golfer of the 78 who entered to shoot below a 70.
Trosper will now take part in a Sectional Qualifier, which will take place between May 22-June 5. In all the Sectionals, a total of 980 golfers will be competing for an opportunity to take part in the U.S. Open Championship, slated for June 15-18 at Erin, Wis.
