ATHENS, Ga. (UCFKnights.com) -- The UCF women's golf team is in a tie for 11th place after one round at the NCAA Athens Regional.
The Knights are 16 over par as a team after the first day of action at the University of Georgia Golf Course. UCF is 20 strokes off the lead, currently held by Michigan State (-4). The Spartans were the only team to post a score below par in Athens Monday.
The Knights are only seven strokes out of sixth place. The top six teams in each of four regions advance to the NCAA Championships.
All four of UCF's scoring players on Monday were 4-over and tied for 38th place. Ashley Holder had the best round of the day going for the Knights. She was 1-over after a birdie on No. 11. But she closed with three straight bogeys. Maria Balcazar birdied the first hole, but slipped to +3 by the turn. She was more consistent on the back nine with just one bogey. Kaeli Jones tallied three birdies on the day, but that was counterbalanced by six bogeys and a double bogey. Johanna Larsson was +3 at the turn and played fairly well down the stretch with just one bogey on the back nine.
Ayaka Nakayama is currently tied for 78th place at 8-over.
The Knights will tee off at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning to begin round two of the three-round tournament.
